CASE STUDY 03 / PUBLIC POLICY & INTEROPERABILITY
Making health information usable across the boundaries of care.
HIMSS national policy committee service, Ohio chapter leadership, advocacy at the Statehouse, engagement with the Cleveland innovation ecosystem, and participation in annual Interoperability Showcase activities.
THE THROUGHLINE
Interoperability is both a technical and an adoption problem.
The goal is not merely to make data move. It is to help clinicians, organizations, patients, and policymakers understand how shared information supports safer, more coordinated care.
My HIMSS service has connected conversations about information exchange, provider adoption, public policy, and how to make technical progress meaningful beyond the demonstration floor.
A SELECTED CHRONOLOGY
Ohio chapter leadership
Public reporting identifies my appointment to the Southern Ohio HIMSS chapter board and public relations committee chair role; later HIMSS chapter materials identify me as a past president.
2011 published appointment ↗National HIMSS Public Policy Committee
Committee service focused on national health-information policy, with attention to interoperability, technology adoption, telehealth, and the operating needs of healthcare organizations. This period is documented in my professional record.
My 2015 National Health IT Week account ↗Ohio Statehouse and Cleveland Innovation Center
During Ohio Health Information Technology Day, the Statehouse and HIMSS Innovation Center in Cleveland were connected by live video programming. A contemporaneous account quotes me as the CSOHIMSS president discussing HIE investments and the need for real-world adoption.
Contemporaneous event coverage ↗Health IT Advocacy Day training
The official April 2017 CSOHIMSS program names me, as past president, to lead an Advocacy Day training refresher before scheduled legislative visits.
Official agenda (PDF) ↗HIMSS Interoperability Showcase engagement
My work included involvement with annual conference Showcase activities, including documented 2024 ambassador participation. The Showcase presents standards-based patient and clinician journeys through connected systems; that program description is a general reference, not independent certification of my individual responsibilities.
About the Interoperability Showcase ↗PRODUCT RELEVANCE
Standards only matter when a workflow changes.
These experiences informed my interest in requirements translation, consensus building, clinician-centered product design, and closing the gap between technical interoperability and actual use.
Leadership roles, conference contributions, and advocacy work are not claims of having engineered the HIMSS Showcase or directed the Cleveland Innovation Center.
